Analysis of Field Data for Pilot Hole Drilling in Horizontal Directional Drilling

Ali Ameli, PhD, PEng, Geo Engineering Ltd. BC, Canada

Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) is an outgrowth of the oil well drilling technology evolved from drilling contractors’ know-how. Theoretical models, e.g., cavity expansion and borehole stability were then applied on the method adopting it as an engineering practice. The technology, methodology and application of the HDD have been described in recent publications and video clips. There are also some advancements in the academic side like model studies, however, very few publications are available on the processing and interpretation of field data during drilling phase to avail the data to researchers and design engineers. The presentation elaborates on the analysis of the data obtained from HDD operations during drilling of pilot holes for ~ 7000 m oil and gas pipeline with reference to directional data, tracking data and the as-built profiles. The annular pressure and pressure: depth ratio are also discussed with introduction of rule-of-thumbs on hydrofracturing thresholds in different type of soils.
